Newport or Depoe Bay for August Salmon Fishing in Oregon?

I am Captain Don Koskela with Pastime Fishing Adventures. I take people on guided fishing trips along the Oregon Coast and on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. I fish out of Newport and Depoe Bay.

Every August people ask me the thing. They want to know which port is better for a salmon trip. Most people think one port is better than the other for fishing.. That is not really the difference.

I have been guiding fishing trips for over 15 years. This is how I help people decide where to go.

Should you go salmon fishing in August out of Newport or Depoe Bay?

If you want a harbor and a short trip to the ocean book Depoe Bay. If you want options and can fish for salmon, bottom fish, halibut or crab book Newport.

Both ports are on the Oregon Coast and they put you in the same ocean. Salmon do not care which port you leave from. What is different is what you do that day.

Depoe Bay is a marina. It is not busy like the ports. Newport is a port with more things going on. You can get services and fish for different things.

Captain Dons quick take

I do not choose a port because of the fishing. I choose it for the people on the trip. If you have people who get nervous on the boat or you want to have lunch in town at a time Depoe Bay is a good choice. If you want to fish all day and catch kinds of fish Newport is better. I am the captain, with the same boat and I care about all my trips. Tell me who is coming and what you want to do. I will tell you where we should start.

What is different about fishing out of Depoe Bay?

Depoe Bay is the simpler option. It is a small harbor, it is less crowded than the ports nearby, and getting in and out is straightforward.

A calm, quick trip out of the harbor sets the tone for the day, and that matters most for families and first-timers. Depoe Bay is also an easy town to build a day around. You are close to the water, close to food, and close to your hotel if you are staying on the coast.

You can see the harbor layout and public facilities on the City of Depoe Bay harbor page if you are planning where to park and meet.

What is different about fishing out of Newport?

Newport has a lot to offer. It is a port with a lot of boats and many places to fish. You can go fishing for rockfish and lingcod or take a trip to catch halibut when it is in season. You can even catch Dungeness crab.

Newport is great because you can do a salmon trip or you can do a trip where you catch salmon and other fish at the time if the weather and time of year are right. This is good if some people in your group want to catch salmon and others want to catch fish all day. Newport is a choice for this.

Newport is a port with a lot of activity. It takes longer to get in and out of the port because there are boats and more people. This makes it feel different, from Depoe Bay.

Does the port change your August salmon fishing odds?

Not much on its own. Ocean conditions, the timing of the run, the weather, and current regulations matter far more than which harbor you left from. August is a good stretch on the central coast, but ocean salmon seasons are managed with quotas and dates that can close a fishery in season. Rules change and fisheries can shut down with short notice. Before you plan a trip around any specific fish, check the current rules and season status posted by ODFW’s ocean salmon season updates. When I plan a trip, I am watching the ocean forecast, the swell, the wind, the bite reports, and the current regulations. If salmon is closed or the ocean is unsafe, we adjust rather than force it.

What should you expect on a Pastime Fishing Adventures trip?

When you go on a trip with me you will be with a small group and I will be your guide. I will teach you things while I am running the boat. We only take six people on each trip. You need to book it directly with me. I give you the rods, reels, bait and tackle. I even make some of the lures myself. I will show you how to fish that day help you use the gear and handle the fish. If you have never gone fishing in the ocean before do not worry. I take people who are just starting out and families on trips all season. The weather decides what we can do. The bar, the swell and the wind tell us what is safe and where we can go. If we need to change our plans change where we start or reschedule I will tell you. We will figure out the best thing to do.

What should you bring when you go on your Oregon fishing charter with me?

You should bring clothes that you can wear in layers, rain gear, food and drinks sunscreen, a camera your Oregon fishing license and medicine for motion sickness if you need it.

The Oregon Coast can change fast. It can be warm when we are getting ready in the parking lot. Then it can be cold and windy when we are, on the water. If you wear a windbreaker or rain jacket a hat and shoes that have grip you will be comfortable.

You need to have an Oregon fishing license to go on the trip and you might need to get some extra endorsements to fish in the ocean. The rules and prices can change so you should check with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife before your trip to make sure you have what you need for your Oregon fishing charter.
